Welcome! Information regarding the VYOA’s audition procedures and requirements can be found below. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like additional information or clarification on the topics below.
Instrumental auditions are open to students who will be between grades 3 and 12 during the 2019-2020 academic year. We find that most students need 1-3 years of experience on their instrument to develop the proficiency required to successfully place into one of our year-round orchestras. For those students not quite ready to audition, we have a number of non-auditioned training programs.
Students in elementary and middle school are required to participate in their school music program (where offered) to be eligible for VYOA participation. We strongly encourage high school members to participate in their school music program. All VYOA musicians are encouraged to take private lessons. We believe combining VYOA membership with school music participation and private lessons offers students a comprehensive and well-rounded music education.
Students are encouraged to consider their audition a significant and formal event, and should arrive at the audition having completed the online audition registration form at least one week in advance. Members of the VYOA artistic staff hear all instrumental auditions. Qualified students are offered placement in the appropriate VYOA ensemble based on the skills and experience level demonstrated in the audition. All students are notified of their audition results via email.
Scheduling an audition
All auditioning students, including current members of VYOA ensembles, must submit a completed registration prior to auditioning. New students can schedule an audition by filling out our audition registration form. Current students will be automatically scheduled an audition, and will receive instructions for completing their audition registration along with their assigned audition time. Audition questions can be emailed to email@example.com. All auditions take place at Elley-Long Music Center at St. Michael’s College in Fort Ethan Allen.
Please have the following information on hand when registering:
- Name and email address for your current private instructor (if applicable)
- The title and composer of the solo you have prepared for your audition (if known at time of registration)
- one or two other solos you have worked on recently
Our primary audition period is in May for the following season (beginning in August/September).
We also hear mid-season auditions for new students in December (to begin rehearsals in their placed ensemble in January). String students who demonstrate that they are qualified for a particular ensemble will typically be invited to join the ensemble best aligned with their capabilities. Wind, brass, and percussion students will be offered placement on a space-available basis.
The VYOA does not require any payment for the opportunity to audition!
Instrumental auditions last approximately 10 minutes and consist of the following components; percussion auditions last approximately 20 minutes:
- Solo of your choice (without accompaniment)
- Scales & arpeggios
- Sight reading
- Students who wish to be considered for placement in our most advanced orchestra—Vermont Youth Orchestra—must also perform the orchestral excerpt assigned to their instrument. Preparation of the orchestral excerpt does not guarantee placement in VYO.
Follow the links below to access a detailed list of instrument-specific audition requirements, and to download the required orchestral excerpt for VYO placement consideration.
The VYOA believes that no child should be discouraged from participating due to financial need. Need-based financial aid is available to all families who wish to apply. Please contact our office for additional information on Financial Aid options or to receive a hard-copy of the Financial Aid form.
