Vermont Youth Strings, our youngest string orchestra, is conducted by VYO alum Ace Ali! The 35-50 young VYS musicians learn the essential skills of ensemble playing with other students from across Vermont. VYS holds a 2-day Mini-Camp in August, presents two concerts each year, performs in local schools and is famous for their themed orchestra parties during the season! Students are accepted into VYS based on audition.
Conductor: Asiat “Ace” Ali
Operations Assistant: Mia Fritze
Mini-Camp: Wednesday & Thursday, August 14 & 15, 2019; 9am – 3pm at Elley-Long Music Center
All VYS students are expected to participate in Mini-Camp – we start learning the music for the semester & have a chance to get to know each other! Missing both days of VYS Mini-Camp counts as 1 absence of the 2 allotted for the Fall semester.
Rehearsals: Sunday afternoons from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m. (September thru mid-April)

Would you like to play in Vermont Youth Strings?
We hold auditions for VYS twice a year & welcome you to join us! Mid-year auditions are held in December, for new students only, with accepted students joining us in January. Annual auditions are held in May, for all current and new students, for the following season that begins with Mini-Camp in August. Click here for more information on auditions.
The VYOA believes that full participation by all members of each ensemble leads to greater success and more fun! VYS students are allowed 2 rehearsal absences per semester for illness or an unavoidable schedule conflict. If students must miss more than 2 rehearsals in a given semester, we ask them to come in and play for the conductor as a check-in to make sure they are keeping up with the VYS music. Parents and/or students must contact Mia Fritze regarding any absences.
Tuition & Financial Aid
Annual tuition fees for participation in the VYOA instrumental and choral programs vary. For the 2018-19 season, tuition for Vermont Youth Strings is $800.00. Please note that tuition is non-refundable. The tuition fees for each ensemble program are announced in June and published in the VYOA Handbook given to each student at the beginning of each concert season.
Financial Aid: The VYOA believes strongly that no child should be discouraged from participating due to financial need. Need-based financial aid is available to all families who wish to apply. Please contact our office for additional information on Financial Aid options or to receive a hard-copy of the Financial Aid application.
