2019-2020 VIOLIN, VIOLA, AND CELLO AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
1. Solo of your choice (without accompaniment)—Prepare a brief solo that demonstrates your technical and expressive capabilities. Due to time constraints, the audition panel may not listen to your solo in its entirety, and will choose the portion you play. Memorization of solo pieces is not required. String players interested in being considered for placement in VYP and VYO must perform a solo that includes frequent shifts. Please bring one additional copy of your solo for the audition panelists; this can be a photocopy.
2. Scales/Arpeggios—Each scale and its corresponding arpeggio should be played in quarter or eighth notes at a minimum tempo of quarter note=80. The panelists will ask to hear one major scale and arpeggio and one minor scale and arpeggio from among those you prepare. Memorization of scales and arpeggios is not required.
For VYO placement consideration, prepare the following scales and arpeggios:
2 major scales of your choice with arpeggio (3 octaves)
2 minor scales—natural, harmonic, or melodic minor—of your choice with arpeggios (3 octaves)
For VYP placement consideration, prepare the following scales and arpeggios:
2 major scales of your choice with arpeggios (minimum 2 octaves)
2 minor scales—natural, harmonic, or melodic minor—of your choice with arpeggios (minimum 2 octaves)
For VYS placement consideration, prepare the following scales and arpeggios:
1 major scale of your choice with arpeggio (minimum 2 octaves)
1 minor scale—natural, harmonic, or melodic minor—of your choice with arpeggio (minimum 1 octave)
3. Sight Reading—You will be asked to play two brief sight reading exercises, and will be given approximately 30 seconds to silently review each exercise before playing it.
4. Orchestral Excerpt (advanced students only)—Students who wish to be considered for placement in Vermont Youth Orchestra (our most advanced orchestra) must also perform the orchestral excerpt for their instrument. Assigned excerpts can be downloaded below; please bring the copy of the excerpt you download and print to your audition. Preparation of the orchestral excerpt does not guarantee placement in VYO.

Current students will be automatically scheduled an audition, and will receive instructions for completing their audition registration along with their assigned audition time.
