The Meaning Behind Mosaics

Every season, our staff comes together to choose a season theme: something we want to embody, strive for, and learn from. This year presents unique challenges that we’re embracing in a positive light. Despite these challenges, we have learned to operate our fractured parts in unison.

Like a mosaic, the pieces of our organization create something beautiful when joined together. This metaphor represents our determination to hold space for music education, whether in-person and socially-distanced, or online.

Our mosaics pieces are…

  • Our Students

    The heart of our organization

Students are the heart of our organization. Our students have been resilient and flexible as we’ve made the transition to online and socially distanced learning.

  • Our VYOA Community

Those who work to make our mission a reality

We have our community to thank for helping us move forward. Our Board, parents, alumni, teachers, patrons, and donors are the support system we’ve relied upon to help us evolve.

  • Our Commitment

Our joint efforts to make music education possible

Our joint commitment to virtual and socially-distanced learning has been central in being able to operate during this time.

Help us fill the rotunda!

We’re memorializing this 57th season by covering the rotunda of the Elley-Long Music Center with vinyl mosaic tiles. Every donation will add a mosaic tile to the rotunda, helping us celebrate our growth together despite the adversity we’ve endured.

Vinyl tiles come in the following sizes:

Extra Small (24″ x 18″) = $57

Small (24″ x 24″) = $157

Medium (24″ x 36″) = $257

Large (24″ x 48″) = $557

Extra Large (30″ x 30″) = $757

Feature (36″ x 36″) = $1,057

What does this fundraiser support?

During the course of COVID-19, we have seen the need for real change within our organization: the obvious pivot to online and socially-distanced learning, but also prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity, expanding the diversity of composers we learn from, and working to provide more global learning opportunities.

We are striving to make these changes. We’ve implemented a Guest Artist Series that exposes our students to professionals across the globe, we’re incorporating into our repertoire contemporary music from diverse composers, and we’re continuing to expand our community outreach programs and provide student scholarships.

These necessary initiatives are the future of a modern orchestra.

While our Online Auction would typically support these initiatives, we recognize the financial strain on our local businesses, and have reimagined our spring fundraiser.

This 57th season, our mosaic artwork will be a memento of overcoming hurdles and continuing to creating music together, even from afar. We invite you to join us in making it the most colorful, eye-catching work of art!
