How do I decide which ensemble to audition for?

  • Students  do not apply for membership in a specific choral ensemble; placement is based on school grade
  • Students entering 3rd to 8th grade in the fall of 2014 are eligible for membership in the Vermont Youth Concert Chorale, under the direction of Kristin Bamberger
  • Students entering 9th to 12th grade in the fall of 2014 are eligible for membership in the VYO Chorus, under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Buettner
  • Male students below 9th grade whose voices have changed may be eligible for membership in the VYO Chorus. Contact auditions@vyo.org for more information

Where are the auditions?

  • All choral auditions are held at the VYOA’s home in the Elley-Long Music Center at St. Michael’s College in Colchester (map). Auditions can also be heard at Dr. Buettner’s office at Middlebury College by prior arrangement. Please contact auditions@vyo.org for further information.

When are auditions?

  • Most VYOA choral auditions are heard during the month of May for the upcoming season
  • Auditions may be heard during the summer by special arrangement. We encourage singers to join by the time our Choral Mini-Camp takes place (August 21-22, 2014)
  • New members may join for the full season prior to the completion of the first three rehearsals in September
  • Auditions to join mid-season (to start in January) are held in December

Who can audition?

  • Students who will be in grades 3-12 in the 2014-15 school year are eligible to join our choral ensembles
  • Post-secondary students (finished with high school and/or 19 years of age or older) are not eligible to participate in VYOA ensembles

What are the objectives of the VYOA placement audition process?

  • To place each student in the ensemble program where he or she can learn and benefit the most from the experience
  • To place each student in the ensemble that can benefit the most from the student’s skills
  • To provide a means of tracking development of our students over time
  • To help our students to gain experience in preparing for and succeeding in auditions and other high-demand situations
