VYOA is committed to ensuring a safe musical experience for all participants. In addition to following federal and state guidelines, we have based our COVID safety protocols on an extensive and ongoing study on aerosol dispersion produced in part by the College Band Directors National Association. The Vermont Department of Health is aware of our strict protocols and has endorsed our use of the Elley-Long Music Center for in-person rehearsals in the 2020-2021 season and beyond. For more information about our COVID safety protocols, visit our COVID-19 information page.

Audition Safety Protocols:

Auditionees should arrive only ten (10) minutes prior to their audition time to ensure no more than three (3) auditionees are in our performance hall at once.  Masks must be worn at all times in the Elley-Long Music Center. Strings and percussion play auditions entirely masked. For winds and brass, masks are pulled down while playing only. During a long rest or when answering an adjudicator’s question, the mask is pulled back up into a correctly-fitted position. Flute players must play while masked. A blue disposable mask works well for this as the elastic provides more give. Brass players are provided puppy-pads to empty their water. Upon arrival at ELMC, winds and brass players that do not have a school-approved bell cover for their instruments are given bell covers which must be used when playing during warmup and audition. It is recommended that auditionees practice with these protocols in place to simulate the actual audition environment.
