Endangered Instruments Program
In 2005 the VYOA added the Endangered Instruments Program. This program provides subsidized private lessons to encourage students to play instruments that are typically difficult to recruit for the orchestras (including string bass, French horn, trombone and bassoon).
The VYOA offers 24 subsidized lessons during the school year to EIP students. Participating students are asked to contribute $5 per lesson for the first two years; $10 per lesson for the third year. The only other requirement is that the student must participate in their school music program.
Under the Endangered Instruments model, everyone is a winner: the students receive private instruction at a reduced cost on their instrument; the VYOA develops a larger pool of students to draw from in the sections of the orchestra that are typically difficult to fill; private teachers are assured a consistent student base, and school music programs see an increase in artistic quality from the students receiving this instruction.
