Established in 2011, Music Inspires is the VYOA’s community engagement program committed to eliminating access barriers to students from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Partnership with area 21C-funded after-school programs is at the very heart of the program. Music Inspires provides group lessons, coachings, instruments, school-day performances, and materials at no cost to students and their families or their schools. During the 2017-2018 school year, students received over 100 hours of group instruction. Our partner schools for the 2018-2019 season are all three Winooski schools (Elementary, Middle, and High) as well as Bakersfield Elementary. Our dedicated outreach instructors hold after-school violin classes, teach in-school lessons, and lead brass, wind, and percussion sectionals at these locations. New this season, the Community Singing Project partners with social service organizations to bring performers and group singing workshops to children in community centers. The VYOA has received National Endowment for the Arts funding in recognition of the impact that Music Inspires has on the community. We are also grateful to People’s United Bank for their ongoing support of Music Inspires.
