A New Eaarth
Posted December 21, 2011 by Lisamarie Charlesworth
Rob Paterson’s three-year Music Alive residency with the VYOA culminates with the World Premiere of a A New Eaarth, presented by the VYO and the Choruses at the Spring Concerts in May 2012. In writing this piece, Paterson drew his inspiration from the book Eaarth by author and environmentalist Bill McKibben. Interspersing original narrative elements with quotes and texts from authors such as Wendell Barry, James Joyce, Percy Bysshe Shelly and William Wordsworth, A New Eaarth expresses musically McKibben’s assertion–and Paterson’s belief-that our Earth as we know it no longer exists. Instead, a new planet Eaarth has been created, still recognizable, but fundamentally different due to the climate change already in progress.
Mr. McKibben will join the orchestra and choruses as the narrator for the presentation of the work. This important event will be framed by Essex cellist Liam John’s performance of the first movement of Edward Elgar’s elegaic Cello Concerto and the orchestra’s interpretation of The Planets of Gustav Holst.
